THE TRUTH ABOUT THE VOICE

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE VOICE

The human voice holds the record of being the first means of communication in the world. Unlike many smart gadgets that lose value immediately after purchase and our written documents that need consistent edits, the human voice has faithfully held its value. Imperfect though it may be, the human voice is still arguably the greatest and most successful means of communication known to people.

There have been times in human history where other forms of communication were tried without much success. The most exciting of them all for me is that of ‘Floriography’ in the Victorian era. This exciting technology of communicating through flower arrangements was invented to help people express thoughts, ideas, wishes, and desires that they could not publicly verbalize.

Back in the victorian era, if you received a lily of the Nile, you knew you had a secret admirer, and they were head over heels in love with you. If the proposition brought you great joy and delight, you could send back a caladium elephant’s ear. And if you were indifferent about the proposal, you could send back a Candytuft. Having been rejected, the proposer could send a Pink Carnation as a way of saying that I will never forget you to which the proposed could send back a stripped Carnation to say, ” Sorry I can’t be with you.

As you can imagine, this would go on for a very long time, making the florist very rich. Floriography is not the preferred means of communication for many today because its shortcomings are plain and clear to see.

Inventions will come and go, but the human voice will remain as the greatest means of communication. With the human voice, we can express all human emotions, which aid us in expressing ourselves and the depths of our feelings.

Our families and communities often seem to be falling apart at the seams due to the lack of clear verbal communication. There appears to be a growing disconnect in society, leading to increasingly violent tensions.

This growing crisis is often efficiently remedied through a good, healthy verbal conversation. I have found that talking is good for our physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing, it is healing for the soul.

There’s much to be gained by talking to each other if we remember that the goal is not to win but to truly hear and be heard.
